Abstract

Many factors affect the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of monocotyledons as plant genotype, Agrobacterium strain and binary vectors. In order to find the optimal conditions for accomplishing the cereal transformation by Agrobacterium we compared the metabolic fingerprinting of different bacterial strains, obtained by the Biolog system, in view to highlight potential correlation between their metabolic diversity and their transformation abilities. Two Agrobacterium strains, representative for the octopine and nopaline groups, have been tested to compare their transformation capability in two dicotyledonous species and in cereals. In addition, the regenerative abilities of various Triticum aestivum L. and Triticale varieties were also tested with the final aim of finding the better conditions for the generation of the wheat transgenic plants.
