Abstract

The propagation of solitary waves in a two-layer fluid with shear is studied in the longwave shallow-water approximation. We show that, to the first order in the perturbation, the wave motion is described by the Korteweg-de Vries equation, whose coefficients now depend on the shear present. Solitary wave solutions are discussed in the following two cases; constant shear flow and Couette shear flow. These results are used to describe the propagation of solution-like internal waves in the Straits of Gibraltar. © 1990, Taylor & Francis Group. All rights reserved.
