Abstract | In Europe, increasing attention has been given to the effect of ground level ozone on human health. At the same time, powerful modeling tools have been developed to assist the policy makers, at continental and national level, in the elaboration of adequate policies to tackle the problem of air pollution and its effects, on the environment and human health. A study on the effects of ozone on people health in Italy was carried out. The Italian modeling system MINNI for Integrated Assessment of Air pollution was used. The results showed how sophisticated modeling tools, especially those using a multi-aspect, multi pollutant approach, like MINNI, are able to provide the policy makers with detailed and comprehensive analyses about the levels of pollution to which the population is exposed, the effects of different abatement policies, in terms of both emission and exposure reductions and finally with an estimation of the mortality effects of ozone on the human health. The findings showed that a great potential of improvement exists in the reduction of health impact from ozone. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 14th International Union of Air pollution Prevention and Environmental Protection Associations World Congress 2007 (Brisbane, Queensland 9/9-13/2007). |
