Abstract

The Lagrangian criteria for regions of material sretching and shear in slowly varying two-dimensional flows was discussed. The near integrability of the equation of variations along trajectories of slowly varying flows were used for the study. The equations of variation along a fluid trajectory in the steady limit were solved using Lagrangian velocities and their normal vectors as a basis along trajectories. For slowly varying incompressible flows, the solution of the equation of variation of a steady flow remained Lagrangian stability indicators.
