Abstract | In Europe, approximately 1 million tons of composites are manufactured each year. Although there are many successful uses for thermoset composite materials, recycling at the end of their life cycle is a more difficult issue. However, the perceived lack of recyclability is now increasingly important and seen as a key barrier to the development or even continued use of composite materials in some markets.> In this frame, the present work describes an innovative process, patented by ENEA and Karborek in Italy, for the recovery of carbon and glass fibers from fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), through a thermal treatment able to save the mechanical properties of the materials till to 90% of the starting fibers. The estimated costs for the recovered carbon fibers (RCF) from the process are lower than virgin carbon fibers: this reduction let forecast the carbon fibers utilization in a wider range of industrial sectors. |
