Abstract | In a study carried out in Cerveteri, near Rome, seven late-flowering, diverse Italian varieties of ’Romanesco’ globe artichoke were assessed based on various agromorphological parameters. The varieties assessed were: Tondo Rosso di Paestum, Pisa, Montelupone A, Montelupone B, Jesino, Ascolano and Pertosa. The agromorphological traits measured included height, weight, date of flowering of the central flowerhead, leaf length, and others indicated in the UPOV descriptor list. An analysis of variance was conducted on the various descriptors assessed. Significant differences were found for measurements of the height of the main flowerhead and date of readiness of flowerhead (p=0.0), thus implying that these are viable descriptors when assessing the different ’Romanesco’ varieties in the field. Less significant were the results obtained for weight of the main flowerhead (p=0.09), leaf length (p=0.14) and receptacle size of the main flowerhead. © ISHS. |
