Abstract | Insects are the most suitable animal group to monitor the environmental sustainability of agricultural practices and livestock. But still lacks an established protocol for monitoring insects associated with agricultural systems that characterize the agricultural areas of high natural value and is not yet activated a network of monitoring at the local level and linking the data collected by academic and non-academic experts. A task of the research project AGRIVAL intend to overcome this lack, concentrating on High Nature Value (HNV) agricultural areas in a district of Basilicata around the Val d’Agri, by developing a method for identification and monitoring. The areas HNV are those in which agriculture binds to the presence of a high abundance of species, to a diversity of habitat or the presence of species of interest for conservation. Agriculture, especially when tied to agricultural and forestry areas with high natural value, plays a role of great importance for the conservation of biodiversity. Through the analysis of geographic and technical available databases, maps will be developed in a GIS environment, designed to map the distribution of insects and habitats related to the use of agr icultural land, with particular reference to HNV agricultural areas. The project will also provide information at European level concerning some practices necessary for the conservation of species and communities particularly rare or endangered and closely related to agro-ecosystems. The results of the study will be made available to the Osservatorio Agroambientale of the Basilicata region, supporting the process of monitoring and evaluation of the Rural Development Policy. The three-year project in its first annuality produced the definition of a preliminary checklist of the biodiversity of species of insects in that area, with about 1200 species belonging to 15 orders for a deployment on over 100 stations in the area subject of study. |
